People moved to major cities during WW2 as more jobs became available in defense industries. Industrial jobs will attract people to cities after the war is over. The United States, one of two superpowers to emerge from WW2 (the USSR was the other), supported the rebuilding of Europe and was enjoying a time of prosperity in the postwar period.
